Inspect the Generator Regularly
Routine inspections are one of the simplest ways to identify problems before they become serious. Operators should look for signs of fuel leaks, loose connections, damaged hoses, corrosion, and unusual wear.
It is also important to check the area around the generator. Dust, debris, moisture, and poor ventilation can affect performance and create unnecessary strain on the equipment.
Check Engine Oil Levels
Engine oil helps reduce friction between moving components and protects the generator’s engine from excessive wear. Oil levels should be checked according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, especially before extended periods of operation.

Monitor the Cooling System
Generators produce significant heat while operating, so the cooling system must remain in good condition. Coolant levels should be checked regularly, and hoses should be inspected for cracks, leaks, or deterioration.
Radiators and ventilation openings should remain clean and unobstructed. Restricted airflow can cause overheating and reduce the generator’s efficiency.
Test the Battery
A generator may be mechanically sound but still fail to start because of a weak battery. Battery terminals should be kept clean and secure, and the battery’s charge level should be tested periodically.
Older batteries may need replacement even if the generator is used infrequently. Regular testing can help prevent starting problems during an emergency.
Run the Generator Periodically
Generators that sit unused for long periods can develop problems that may not be obvious during a visual inspection. Periodic test runs allow operators to confirm that the engine starts properly and that major systems are functioning.
